The Church doesn't just mark time with dates on a calendar; she lives in a rhythm of feasts and fasts that mirror the life of Christ. This is the Liturgical Year.
Bringing this rhythm into your home (the "Domestic Church") is one of the best ways to deepen your faith and your family's connection to God.
The Major Seasons
Advent
The "New Year" of the Church. It is a time of waiting and preparation for Christmas.
- At Home: Set up an Advent Wreath. Light a candle each Sunday at dinner.
- Color: Purple (Penance/Waiting) + Rose (Joy).
Christmas
Not just a day, but a season! It lasts until the Baptism of the Lord.
- At Home: Keep your decorations up! Host a feast on Epiphany (Three Kings Day).
- Color: White/Gold (Celebration).
Lent
A 40-day journey of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving before Easter.
- At Home: Eat simple meals. Give up something as a family. Pray the Stations of the Cross on Fridays.
- Color: Purple.
Easter
The highest feast of all!
- At Home: Celebrate for 50 days (longer than Lent!). Fresh flowers, special desserts.
- Color: White/Gold.
Ordinary Time
The time to grow in our daily walk with Christ.
- At Home: Focus on the Sunday Gospel. Celebrate your baptism anniversaries or "Name Days" (Saints' feast days).
- Color: Green (Growth).
Simple Ways to Start
- Follow the Colors: Change your dining table cloth to match the liturgical color.
- Mark Fridays: Eat meatless meals on Fridays year-round (or do another penance).
- Celebrating Name Days: Instead of just birthdays, celebrate the feast day of your [patron saint](/guides/who-is-my-patron-saint).
Living liturgically helps us remember that our citizenship is in Heaven.
