The Chair of St. Peter — The Authority of the Pope

We don't worship furniture. The 'Chair' (Cathedra) is a symbol of the teaching authority Jesus gave to Peter. Why the Pope matters.

On February 22, the Church celebrates a chair. It represents the Cathedra (Seat) of the Bishop of Rome. When a professor speaks "from the chair" (ex cathedra), he speaks with authority.

The Keys (Matt 16:18)

Jesus gave Peter the "Keys to the Kingdom." In the Old Testament (Isaiah 22), the keeper of the keys was the Prime Minister. When the King (Jesus) is away, the Prime Minister (Pope) runs the house. The Pope is not a dictator. He is a servant. His job is to keep the Church united and faithful to Jesus' teachings until He returns.
