A "Litany" is a prayer of repetition. It is like a love song where the chorus repeats. The Litany of the Sacred Heart has 33 titles for Jesus — one for each year of His life on earth.
It is often prayed on the Feast of the Sacred Heart and on First Fridays.
Key Invocations Explained
"Heart of Jesus, Son of the Eternal Father" We start by affirming His divinity. This human heart beating in a human chest is the Heart of God.
"Heart of Jesus, formed by the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Virgin Mother" We honor the Incarnation. The Holy Spirit knit this heart together in Mary's womb.
"Heart of Jesus, burning furnace of charity" Fire symbolizes divinity and intensity. His love is not lukewarm; it consumes.
"Heart of Jesus, patient and most merciful" Think of how patient He was with the Apostles. Think of how patient He is with you.
"Heart of Jesus, propitiation for our sins" "Propitiation" means atonement. This Heart paid the debt we could not pay.
"Heart of Jesus, salvation of those who trust in Thee" Trust is the key that unlocks the Heart. "Jesus, I trust in You."
Indulgence
