The Joyful Mysteries mark the beginning of our redemption. They are prayed on Mondays and Saturdays (and Sundays during Advent/Christmas). They tell the story of Jesus' "hidden life."

1. The Annunciation

The Event: Angel Gabriel appears to Mary. She says "Yes" (Fiat). The Fruit/Virtue: Humility. Meditation: Mary was troubled, but she trusted God's plan over her own fears. Scripture: "Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy word." (Luke 1:38)

2. The Visitation

The Event: Mary travels in haste to help her pregnant cousin Elizabeth. John the Baptist leaps in the womb. The Fruit/Virtue: Love of Neighbor. Meditation: Mary carried Jesus to others immediately. She didn't stay home to be pampered; she went to serve. Scripture: "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!" (Luke 1:42)

3. The Nativity

The Event: Jesus is born in a stable in Bethlehem. The Fruit/Virtue: Poverty of Spirit / Detachment. Meditation: The King of Kings was born on straw. He chose poverty to show us that wealth is not the goal of life. Scripture: "She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger." (Luke 2:7)

4. The Presentation

The Event: Mary and Joseph bring baby Jesus to the Temple. Simeon prophesies a sword of sorrow. The Fruit/Virtue: Obedience. Meditation: They obeyed the Law of Moses, even though they were the Holy Family. They didn't claim exemption. Scripture: "My eyes have seen your salvation." (Luke 2:30)

5. The Finding in the Temple

The Event: 12-year-old Jesus is lost for three days. Found teaching the elders. The Fruit/Virtue: Joy in Finding Jesus / Piety. Meditation: Have I lost Jesus through sin? Do I search for Him with sorrow and anxiety until I find Him in the "Temple" (Confession)? Scripture: "Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?" (Luke 2:49)
