The Sorrowful Mysteries are the heart of the Christian faith. We pray them on Tuesdays and Fridays (and daily during Lent). They remind us of the price of our souls.
1. The Agony in the Garden
The Event: Jesus prays in Gethsemane while the Apostles sleep. He sweats blood. The Fruit/Virtue: Sorrow for Sin / Conformity to God's Will. Meditation: He saw every sin I would ever commit, and the weight crushed Him. Yet He said, "Not my will, but Yours be done." Scripture: "And being in agony he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood." (Luke 22:44)
2. The Scourging at the Pillar
The Event: Pilate orders Jesus to be whipped. The Fruit/Virtue: Purity / Mortification of the Senses. Meditation: His innocent flesh was torn to pay for sins of the flesh (lust, gluttony, comfort-seeking). Scripture: "By his wounds you have been healed." (Isaiah 53:5)
3. The Crowning with Thorns
The Event: Soldiers mock Him as King, shoving thorns into His scalp. The Fruit/Virtue: Moral Courage / Contempt for the World. Meditation: The King of the Universe is mocked. He endures mental pride and verbal abuse to pay for my pride. Scripture: "They stripped him and put a scarlet robe on him, and twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on his head." (Matthew 27:28)
4. The Carrying of the Cross
The Event: Jesus carries the wood to Calvary. He falls three times. The Fruit/Virtue: Patience. Meditation: He accepts the Cross. He doesn't complain. He embraces the instrument of His death because it is the instrument of my life. Scripture: "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." (Matthew 16:24)
5. The Crucifixion
The Event: Jesus is nailed to the Cross and dies after three hours. The Fruit/Virtue: Preserverance / Pardon of Injuries. Meditation: "Father, forgive them." He forgives His murderers while He is suffocating. Can I forgive the person who annoyed me today? Scripture: "It is finished." (John 19:30)
