The word "angel" means messenger. The prefix "arch" means chief or ruler. These are the heavy hitters of heaven. While Jewish tradition names seven archangels, the Catholic Church officially venerates only the three named in Scripture.
1. St. Michael ("Who is like God?")
The Warrior.
- Role: Defender of the Church, enemy of Satan, guardian of souls at death.
- Bible: Revelation 12 (Battle in Heaven), Jude 9 (Dispute over Moses' body).
- Symbol: Sword and scales.
2. St. Gabriel ("Strength of God")
The Messenger.
- Role: Announcer of Good News. He stands in the presence of God (Luke 1:19).
- Bible: Daniel (Prophecy), Luke 1 (Annunciation to Mary and Zechariah).
- Symbol: Trumpet or Lily.
3. St. Raphael ("God Heals")
The Healer.
- Role: Patron of travelers, matchmakers (marriage), and healing.
- Bible: Book of Tobit (he guides Tobiah and heals Tobit's blindness).
- Symbol: Staff and fish.
What about Uriel?
You might see "Uriel" in art, but he is not in the Catholic canon of Scripture (he is in the apocryphal Book of Enoch). The Church discourages naming angels that aren't in the Bible to avoid New Age confusion.
