Latin Treasury & Penitential Psalms

De Profundis (Psalm 130 in Latin and English: Out of the Depths I Cry to Thee)

Liturgical Setting, Posture & Origins

📜 Historical & Biblical Origin: Psalm 130 (De Profundis, From the Depths) is the sixth of the Seven Penitential Psalms of David, chanted for millennia in Latin at Catholic funerals, cemetery processions, and for the holy souls in purgatory.

🕯️ Liturgical Setting & Posture: Kneel or bow your head reverently. Prayed especially on All Souls' Day (November 2), during the month of November, or when hearing of someone's sudden death.

In Latin:

De profundis clamavi ad te, Domine;

Domine, exaudi vocem meam.

Fiant aures tuae intendentes

in vocem deprecationis meae.

Si iniquitates observaveris, Domine,

Domine, quis sustinebit?

Quia apud te propitiatio est;

et propter legem tuam sustinui te, Domine.

Sustinuit anima mea in verbo eius;

speravit anima mea in Domino.

A custodia matutina usque ad noctem,

speret Israel in Domino.

Quia apud Dominum misericordia,

et copiosa apud eum redemptio.

Et ipse redimet Israel

ex omnibus iniquitatibus eius.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine:

et lux perpetua luceat eis.

Requiescant in pace. Amen.

English Translation:

Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, O Lord:

Lord, hear my voice.

Let Thine ears be attentive

to the voice of my supplication.

If Thou, Lord, shouldest mark iniquities,

O Lord, who shall stand?

For with Thee there is merciful forgiveness:

and by reason of Thy law, I have waited for Thee, O Lord.

My soul hath relied on His word:

my soul hath hoped in the Lord.

From the morning watch even until night,

let Israel hope in the Lord.

Because with the Lord there is mercy:

and with Him plentiful redemption.

And He shall redeem Israel

from all his iniquities.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord:

and let perpetual light shine upon them.

May they rest in peace. Amen.

"Biopsy Results Returned 100% Benign"

I recited this novena every day before my surgery and lit a 7-day vigil candle. The peace that entered my heart the night before was inexplicable. Two days later, my oncologist called to say the biopsy came back completely benign. Glory to God!

My eldest son had not spoken to our family for over 4 years. We offered a Holy Mass intention for him on his birthday and united in prayer on this wall. Two weeks later, he knocked on our front door asking for forgiveness. God never abandons a praying mother.
