The Jesus Prayer of the Desert Fathers (Hesychastic Breathing Prayer)
📜 Historical & Biblical Origin: Practiced by the Desert Fathers of Egypt, Mount Sinai, and Mount Athos from the 3rd century onward (St. Anthony the Great, St. John Climacus), uniting Luke 18:13 and the Holy Name of Jesus (Philippians 2:9-10).
🕯️ Instructions & Posture: Sit in a quiet room with back straight. Close your eyes. Inhale gently through the nose while silently praying the first clause; exhale slowly while praying the second clause. Repeat continuously for 10 to 20 minutes to calm racing thoughts and center the soul in God's presence.
Inhaling gently:
"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God..."
Exhaling slowly:
"...have mercy on me, a sinner."
O Divine Physician of souls and bodies, who didst enter the silence of the wilderness to overcome the tempter, silence within my heart all clamor, anxiety, and worldly distraction.
Let the Holy Name of Jesus be the rhythmic breath of my spirit, a fortress against every despairing thought, and an unquenchable flame of divine charity within my inner chamber. In waking and in sleeping, in labour and in rest, let my soul whisper without ceasing:
"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner."
For at Thy Holy Name every knee shall bend, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.
