Prayer on the Day of Childbirth and Safe Labor & Delivery

Liturgical Setting, Posture & Origins

📜 Scriptural Anchor: "When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world." — John 16:21

🕯️ Instructions: Recited by the mother, father, or family members in the delivery suite when contractions intensify or before entering the labor room.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, born of the Virgin Mary in the humble cave of Bethlehem: accompany us into this holy and decisive hour of childbirth.

We pray for this mother in her labor. Grant her bodily stamina, rhythmic breathing, emotional courage, and supernatural peace. As contractions surge, remind her that each wave brings her closer to looking into the face of her precious baby. Grant her relief from excessive distress, and preserve her strength throughout the delivery.

We place the unborn child into Thy loving hands. Guide the baby into a safe and natural position for birth. Protect the child from umbilical complications, distress, oxygen deprivation, and all birth trauma.

Bless the obstetrician, midwives, delivery nurses, and pediatricians. Guide their hands and monitoring equipment with skill and prompt discernment. May this delivery be smooth, safe, and triumphant.

Blessed Virgin Mary, who didst hold the newborn Infant Jesus to thy breast, surround this delivery room with holy peace. St. Gerard Majella and St. Margaret of Antioch, patrons of childbirth, pray for us. Father, let our first sound be the cry of new life, and our response be tears of thanksgiving. Amen.

I recited this novena every day before my surgery and lit a 7-day vigil candle. The peace that entered my heart the night before was inexplicable. Two days later, my oncologist called to say the biopsy came back completely benign. Glory to God!

"Reconciliation with My Estranged Son"

My eldest son had not spoken to our family for over 4 years. We offered a Holy Mass intention for him on his birthday and united in prayer on this wall. Two weeks later, he knocked on our front door asking for forgiveness. God never abandons a praying mother.
