It is awkward. It is humbling. Walking into a box and telling a man your darkest secrets. Why do we do it? Why not just pray in your room?
1. Because Jesus Said So (John 20:21-23)
On Easter Sunday night, the first thing Jesus did was establish Confession. He breathed on the Apostles (the first priests) and said:
"Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
Think about it: How can the Apostles know which sins to forgive and which to retain if the people don't tell them? They can't read minds. The people had to confess aloud.
2. We Are Body and Soul
We sin with our bodies (actions), so we need to be forgiven in a bodily way (hearing words). "Apologizing to God" in your head is subjective. You never really know if He forgave you, or if you just made yourself feel better. When the priest says "I absolve you," you know for a fact, with 100% certainty, that your sins are gone.
3. James 5:16
"Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed." The Bible explicitly commands us to confess to another person, not just privately to God.
4. The Old Testament Type
In Leviticus, when a Jew sinned, he didn't just say sorry. He brought a lamb to the priest. The priest sacrificed it. The priest made atonement. Jesus fulfilled this system; He didn't abolish the mediation.
FAQ
Does the priest remember my sins? Honestly? No. It goes in one ear and out the other. He has heard it all before. It is like a garbage man; he doesn't check what is in the bags.
