When illness strikes, Catholics have a powerful tradition of asking specific saints for intercession. These saints are called "patron saints" of healing—special friends in heaven who understand our suffering.
Here are the key saints of healing to know.
The "Big Three" Healing Saints
1. St. Luke (Patron of Doctors)
St. Luke the Evangelist is the [patron saint](/guides/who-is-my-patron-saint) of physicians and surgeons. He was a doctor himself—and he wrote the Gospel that bears his name and the Book of Acts.
His medical background makes him a natural patron for doctors and anyone seeking healing.
Prayer to St. Luke:
St. Luke, you who were a physician and an evangelist, obtain for me the grace of healing. Help those who care for the sick. Guide the doctors who treat me. Amen.
2. St. Raphael (Patron of Healing)
St. Raphael the Archangel is one of the three archangels mentioned in Scripture (Michael, Gabriel, Raphael). His name means "God has healed."
In the Book of Tobit, Raphael appears to heal Tobit's blindness.
Prayer to St. Raphael:
St. Raphael, angel of healing, I ask for your help. Guide the doctors. Grant wisdom to the healers. Bring health to my body. Amen.
3. St. Pantaleon (Patron of Physicians)
St. Pantaleon was a physician who was martyred around 305 AD. He's one of the "Fourteen Holy Helpers"—a group of saints venerated for their power to help in various needs.
Prayer to St. Pantaleon:
St. Pantaleon, physician and martyr, you who healed in the name of Christ, obtain for me the healing I need. Amen.
Saints for Specific Conditions
For Cancer: St. Peregrine
St. Peregrine (1260-1347) was a Dominican who was miraculously healed from cancer. He's invoked specifically for cancer patients.
For Eye Problems: St. Lucy
St. Lucy of Syracuse (d. 304) is the patron saint of eye problems. Her name comes from "lux" (light).
For Mental Health: St. Dymphna
St. Dymphna is the patron saint of those with nervous disorders, depression, and mental health issues.
For Addictions: St. Maximilian Kolbe
St. Maximilian Kolbe (1894-1941) is the patron of those fighting addiction. He offered his life for another in Auschwitz.
For Children's Health: St. Nicholas
St. Nicholas is invoked for children's health—not just as a gift-giver, but as a protector.
Saints Who Experienced Illness
St. Joseph of Cupertino
St. Joseph of Cupertino experienced great physical struggles. He's invoked for those who are physically limited.
St. Teresa of Avila
St. Teresa suffered from illness throughout her life—and offered it up. She's invoked for those who suffer.
St. Thérèse of Lisieux
St. Thérèse died of tuberculosis at 24. She understood suffering—and transformed it into love.
How to Invoke These Saints
1. Simply Ask
Go to them in prayer. "St. Luke, please pray for me."
2. Use Their Novenas
Many healing saints have novenas—9-day prayer cycles. Novena to St. Peregrine is particularly popular.
3. Light a Candle
Light a candle as a physical sign of your intention. Let it burn as you pray.
4. Visit Their Shrines
If possible, visit shrines dedicated to these saints. Pilgrimage is a powerful Catholic tradition.
