One of the most important Catholic social principles is the "Preferential Option for the Poor." What does it mean?
The Definition
What It Is
The Preferential Option for the Poor is the teaching that God has a special concern for the poor—and so should we.
The Principle
Those who are "last" should be "first" in our concern—the marginalized, the vulnerable, the forgotten.
Biblical Basis
The Old Testament
God repeatedly commands care for the widow, the orphan, the stranger.
The New Testament
Jesus' ministry focused on the poor: "He has sent me to bring good news to the poor" (Luke 4:18).
How to Live It
1. Give
Support the poor—through money, time, advocacy.
2. Advocate
Speak up for the marginalized.
3. Prioritize
Make the poor a priority in your giving and your time.
A Prayer
Lord, help me to have a preferential option for the poor. Teach me to care for the least among us. Amen.
