St. Cecilia is famous for being the patron of musicians. But why? She didn't play the piano (it wasn't invented). The legend says that at her wedding (to a man she didn't want to marry, having vowed virginity), "while the organs played, she sang in her heart to the Lord alone."
The Martyrdom
She converted her husband (Valerian) and his brother. All three were martyred. The executioner tried to behead her three times but failed. She lived for three days, bleeding from her neck, preaching to the crowds, holding up three fingers (for the Trinity) and one finger (for the One God).
The Influence
For centuries, composers like Handel, Purcell, and Gounod wrote "Odes to St. Cecilia." She reminds us that all art should point to God.
