St. John the Baptist — The Voice in the Wilderness

Jesus called him "the greatest man born of woman" (Matthew 11:11). St. John the Baptist is unique among saints. We celebrate his birth (June 24) rather than just his death. Why? Because he was sanctified in the womb during the Visitation.

The Forerunner

His job description was simple: Prepare the Way. He was the last Old Testament prophet and the first New Testament martyr. He stood with one foot in each covenant.

The Message: "He Must Increase"

John's humility is his superpower. When his own disciples started leaving him to follow Jesus, John didn't get jealous. He said:

"He must increase, but I must decrease." (John 3:30) This is the secret to holiness. It is not about me becoming great; it is about Christ becoming great in me.

Traditions for St. John's Eve

In many cultures (especially Europe and Quebec), the night of June 23 is celebrated with bonfires.

  • Symbolism: John described himself as a "burning and shining lamp" (John 5:35). The fire represents his zeal.
  • Timing: His feast is near the Summer Solstice, when the days begin to get shorter. Just as the sun decreases after his birthday, John decreased so the Son (born at the Winter Solstice, when days get longer) could increase.
