Night Prayer of Compline (The Liturgy of the Hours Before Sleep)

Liturgical Setting, Posture & Origins

πŸ“œ Historical & Biblical Origin: Compline (Completorium, meaning completion) has been the universal night prayer of the Christian Church since the Rule of St. Benedict (c. 530 AD), uniting the protective shelter of Psalm 91 with the Canticle of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis, Luke 2:29-32).

πŸ•―οΈ Liturgical Setting & Posture: Dim all lights in the bedroom. Light a single candle. Make the Sign of the Cross at the opening versicle.

Opening Versicle:

V. The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night and a perfect end.

R. Amen.

V. Our help is in the name of the Lord.

R. Who made heaven and earth.

The Psalm of Nocturnal Protection (Psalm 91:4-6):

He will cover you with His feathers,

and under His wings you will find refuge;

His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart.

You will not fear the terror of night,

nor the arrow that flies by day,

nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness,

nor the plague that destroys at midday.

The Canticle of Simeon (Nunc Dimittis):

Now, Master, You may let Your servant go in peace,

according to Your word.

For my eyes have seen Your salvation,

which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples:

A light for revelation to the Gentiles,

and the glory of Your people Israel.

Concluding Prayer:

Visit this house, we beseech Thee, O Lord, and drive far from it all snares of the enemy. Let Thy holy angels dwell herein to preserve us in peace, and let Thy blessing be always upon us. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

"Biopsy Results Returned 100% Benign"

I recited this novena every day before my surgery and lit a 7-day vigil candle. The peace that entered my heart the night before was inexplicable. Two days later, my oncologist called to say the biopsy came back completely benign. Glory to God!

My eldest son had not spoken to our family for over 4 years. We offered a Holy Mass intention for him on his birthday and united in prayer on this wall. Two weeks later, he knocked on our front door asking for forgiveness. God never abandons a praying mother.
