O my God, teach me to be gentle toward myself.
When I stumble into faults and repeat the weaknesses I have so often wept over,
preserve my soul from the bitter storm of self-reproach, anger, and despair.
Remind me that harshness toward myself is not holy humility, but disguised pride,
which is astonished that it has fallen once again.
Give me the grace, Lord, immediately upon falling,
to rise quietly, to look up into Thy merciful face with a gentle smile of contrition,
and to say: "See, Lord, what I am capable of doing when left to myself!
Forgive me; help me to begin again this very hour."
Deliver my heart from hurry, turbulence, and scrupulous agitation.
Let me do all things with tranquil diligence, trusting that Thy grace works gently,
like the dew falling silently upon the meadows in the night.
Make my heart meek and humble, like the heart of Thy Beloved Son. Amen.
