Saint Agatha Prayer for Breast Cancer Patients and Diseases of the Breast

Liturgical Setting, Posture & Origins

📜 Historical & Biblical Origin: Saint Agatha of Sicily (c. 231–251 AD), early virgin martyr who endured the brutal torture of her breasts during the Decian persecution and was miraculously healed in prison by an apparition of Saint Peter. She is the universal patroness of breast cancer patients, mammography screenings, and nursing mothers.

🕯️ Instructions & Posture: Prayed before a mammogram screening, after a suspicious lump discovery, or throughout chemotherapy, mastectomy, and radiation for breast cancer.

Saint Agatha, holy virgin and fearless martyr of Christ,

who didst suffer unspeakable cruelty to thy body and wast comforted and healed by the Apostle Peter:

Look with maternal compassion upon me and all women facing disease of the breast.

I bring before thee the fear of abnormal mammogram screenings, biopsies, and the diagnosis of breast cancer.

Intercede for me before the Divine Physician, Jesus Christ.

Touch with healing grace all breast tissue, lymph nodes, and blood vessels.

Halt the division and spread of all malignant tumors.

Grant divine skill to the surgeons performing lumpectomies, mastectomies, and reconstructive surgeries,

and ease the debilitating side effects of chemotherapy, hormone therapy, and radiation.

Give me thine invincible courage in the face of suffering.

When my body feels scarred, altered, or fatigued, remind me that my true beauty lies in the incorruptible grace of my soul.

Saint Agatha, protectress of women and patroness of breast cancer, pray for me! Amen.

I recited this novena every day before my surgery and lit a 7-day vigil candle. The peace that entered my heart the night before was inexplicable. Two days later, my oncologist called to say the biopsy came back completely benign. Glory to God!
