Saint Blaise Blessing of Throats (Protection from Throat Illness, Cough and Choking)
📜 Historical & Biblical Origin: Saint Blaise (died 316 AD), Bishop of Sebastea in Armenia and physician, saved the life of a boy choking to death on a fishbone through his prayer, establishing the Church's ancient February 3rd ritual of blessing throats with crossed candles.
🕯️ Liturgical Setting & Posture: Place two crossed unlit candles (or your right hand) against the neck and throat while reciting this blessing.
Through the intercession of Saint Blaise, bishop and martyr,
may God deliver thee from every disease of the throat, from choking, and from every other evil.
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
O Glorious Saint Blaise, who didst employ thy medical skill and priestly sanctity to relieve human suffering,
and who didst miraculously restore the child choking upon a bone:
Hear our prayers for all who suffer from ailments of the throat:
from severe coughing, asthma, viral infections, laryngitis, nodules, and difficulty swallowing.
Protect our children and infants from choking on foreign objects and food.
Restore voice to singers, speakers, teachers, and clergy whose throats are strained.
Guard our throats so that from our mouths may come forth only words of truth, praise, and kindness,
and never the venom of gossip, slander, or blasphemy.
May the blessing of Almighty God rest upon our bodies and preserve our health.
