St. Agatha (d. 251) is one of the 7 women mentioned in the Canon of the Mass. Like St. Agnes, she was a young virgin who refused a pagan official. Her torture was gruesome: Her breasts were severed. Legend says St. Peter appeared to her in prison and healed her wounds before she was finally martyred.
Patronage
She is the patron of:
- Breast Cancer patients.
- Rape victims.
- Wet nurses.
- Bell-founders (due to the shape of severed breasts... medieval humor was dark). She stands as a witness that the body can be destroyed, but the soul belongs to God alone.
